Chinese Actress Mei Ting joins Save the Children to advocate inclusive education

Famous Chinese actress Ms. Mei Ting accepted the certificate of ‘Inclusive education Ambassador for Save the Children in China’ from the hands of Ms. Wang Le, Deputy Country Director of China Program and Wang Junyi, a fifth-grader with physical disability benefiting from our inclusive education work in Sichuan on an event held on May 29th in Beijing. On the event, Save the Children and local partners jointly launched the first ever journalism competition to take place in China on inclusive education, in an effort to encourage and empower Chinese journalists to cover more good stories on children with disabilities receiving education. Mei Ting says ‘it’s my great honor to join Save the Children to help more children with disabilities to get access to basic quality education. Like other children, children with disabilities also have the right to education and to pursue their dreams.”

Save the Children China Program started promoting equal right to quality education for children with disabilities in 2009. Lessons learnt during the first phase of this program were fed into the revision of China’s 1994 Regulations on the Education of Persons with Disabilities, and the revised Regulations are promoting inclusive education as a result. Current work focuses on making inclusive education work in practice, including by involving a celebrity and the media to combat negative stereotypes associated with children with disabilities attending mainstream schools.
